Thank God we are not at the mercy of our own opinions. As we read the words of Jesus, our hearts can tell that His words are not from man, but from God. All that He speaks is foolish to the mind of man. We "know" that reality is a dog-eat-dog, every man for himself struggle. We take great pride in our intellect and achievements, subjecting nature and our fellow man in order to achieve a false security. We love to establish structure and ritual, vainly thinking that we have conquered something by the simple act of naming it. Then along comes Jesus, telling us to die and be born again. Telling us that the way to truth and everlasting life is to deny ourselves and follow him through this crazy crucifixion, to rise again in the spirit. Telling us to go the extra mile, turn the other cheek, wash each other's feet, etc. This could not have come from the mind of man. Where did it come from? The whole Bible points to, and leads us to, the God/man Jesus of Nazareth. It's either all true, or useless, and without hope. |
